Bali Day 3: Barong & Kris Dance + Luwak Coffee

This was our last full day in Bali. It was bittersweet and made us do crazy things. We were in that mindstate of “Who cares what we do? We’re leaving anyway!” But before the beach photos and that last night in Bali, we went to visit a few places.

The good spirit, I forgot what it was called. It’s so hard to pronounce. >.<

We watched the full-length performance of their traditional Barong & Kris dance. I came to understand the story through this informative piece of paper they gave us. The characters were basically portrayals of the good and evil spirit and the dance portrays the battle between these two spirits.

Paskuhan 2012

This year was my first Paskuhan as one of UST’s alumni. It was nice to revisit the campus and enjoy the day’s festivities as a graduate.

On this morning of the so-called apocalypse, our family is listening to a CD of my dad and his buddies singing. Now I wish the world had ended so I never heard it.

The Day I Got My PRC License

The claim stub clearly read: 12.14.12. It’s the 13th of December, a day earlier than the specified date, but I went anyway. The process of claiming was easy enough… for my friend. For me, it was a whole ‘nother story.

My friend, Gian, told the person behind the glass window my surname. Expecting to see my license, I was surprised to see the person hold up my claim stub.

“You don’t have a photo.” He told me.

“Why do I need a photo?” I asked. Since my friend got hers with no problem at all.

“Your file got corrupted. Do you have any passport sized photo we can use so we can  have the license printed already?”

“No.” I answered. I was already feeling a bit frustrated this time. Of all the people, why did this happen to me?

I hurriedly got my photo taken at this 1 minute photo service inside the vicinity, which didn’t take a minute by the way. Then I submitted it to the window and was told to return after 3 hours.

3 hours.

What the hell was I supposed to do for 3 hours? Luckily, I had a friend with me. We went to the mall, had lunch and shopped to kill time. By the time I returned to PRC, my license was there alright…

…but the photo on it was the old one. The photo that was supposedly corrupted.

I can’t even describe the way I felt after I got handed my license. It was a mix of anger, disappointment and frustration.

“I’m so fucking annoyed.” I kept repeating with a sarcastic smile on my face as Gian and I walked out on the streets.

The reason why I’m sharing this story? So I can share the lessons I learned today.

1. Bring an extra passport-sized photo. I had to pay 80 bucks for 4 passport-sized photos, which is a bit more expensive than other quick photo printing services. Can’t blame them though, the fact that they’re in the vicinity makes them a convenient choice.

2. Double check. When they tell you that your photo’s corrupted, ask them to check again. Even if they tell you that a lot of people experienced the same thing, like they told me.

3. Stay positive. A bout of unluckiness may have come my way but we just laughed about it after. Plus, we did score some nice stuff at the mall during that 3 hours of waiting.
